GLENN CLOSE TRIUMPHS AT SAG AWARDS

28th Jan, 2019

Screen Daily by Jeremy Kay

Rami Malek and Glenn Close won lead acting honours and Black Panther took the ensemble cast prize at the 25th annual SAG Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (27).

Bohemian Rhapsody front man Malek and The Wife star Close did their Oscar chances a lot of good with the wins heading into the 91st Academy Awards on February 24. Malek is a strong lead actor contender, while Close must now be viewed as the one to beat in the lead actress category.

Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) prevailed in the supporting acting categories. Ali will face stiff competition for the Oscar from Sam Elliott from A Star Is Born, when the Academy’s entire membership votes on the nominees selected by the actors branch. Unlike Ali, Blunt is not nominated for an Oscar. Regina King was left out by SAG and is regarded as the Oscar front-runner.

Black Panther took the ensemble cast award in a popular win on the night. A Star Is Born ended the night with no awards despite nominations in the male actor category for Bradley Cooper, supporting actor for Elliott, and ensemble cast.

In the television categories, winners included drama series actor Jason Bateman for Ozark, TV movie or miniseries actress Patricia Arquette for Escape At Dannemora, female comedy series actor Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and male comedy series actor Tony Shalhoub for the same show.
