13 Dec THE FATHER wins Best Actor and Best Screenplay at EFA
Jasmila Zbanic’s Quo Vadis, Aida?, a stirring drama about the 1995 Srebrenica massacre has won the top prize for European Film 2021 at the 34th European Film Awards, given out in a virtual ceremony from Berlin Saturday night.
The film, which was an Oscar nominee for best international feature this year, also won best directing honors for Zbanic and the European actress prize went to star Jasna Duricic for her performance as a Bosnian translator for the UN trying to save her family from Serbian troops.
Best actor honors went to Anthony Hopkins who took the European Actor prize for his starring role in The Father, playing a man with dementia, a performance that already earned him an Oscar. The Father director Florian Zeller and co-writer Christopher Hampton also took the prize for best European screenplay.
The EFAs, one of Europe’s most prestigious cinema honors, was hosted by German actress, moderator and writer Annabelle Mandeng from a studio in Berlin, with nominees and winners joining via video link.
Flee, an animated documentary from Danish director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, was another multiple winner, taking best European animated film, best documentary and the European University Film Award.
